FAQs

I know that parents and students have many questions regarding the transition process that would usually be answered during visits to primary schools or via a phone call. Even though this year is very different I still want to ensure I answer as many questions as I can so that the transition is as smooth and as stress-free as possible. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards, Miss Palmer.

Do you think we will be able to visit the high school before we start?

This is a great question, and one that I think a lot of Year 6 parents and pupils will be thinking about. Now COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted we are hoping we will be able to invite students in for transition week in July.

What are the timings of the school day?

The Academy Day can be viewed here.

What are your term dates?

Our term dates can be viewed here.

What uniform and equipment will my child need?

Our uniform list can be viewed here.

Students will also require a clear pencil case containing:

  • Black Pen x 2
  • Purple Pen x 2
  • Pencils x 2
  • Scientific Calculator (Casio fx-85GT)
  • Rubber
  • Ruler
  • Pencil Sharpener
  • Protractor
  • Highlighter, any colour but not purple

How is homework set?

At The Hyndburn students will be set homework by your different teachers these can be viewed on the Arbor App. To look at this homework students can download an app on to your phone or look at on the computers in school and also at home. On the app or website you will be able to see the date that your homework has been set, which teacher has set the homework, a description of the homework, and also when it is due in. If you need to complete a worksheet then your teacher can also attach this so you can print it off in school or at home. We have a lot of computers available in school for you to use so you do not need to worry if your child doesn't have a phone, computer or tablet at home. More information on homework can be found here.

I always get to see the teachers at primary school when I drop my child off. How do I speak to the teachers at The Hyndburn Academy and how do I find out who I need to speak to?

Communication can look very different at high school compared to primary school but that does not mean we don’t want to have the same level of communication. Communication is key to the transition aspect of your child’s life at THe Hyndburn Academy but also throughout their time with us. At primary you will probably only deal with one teacher each year and perhaps the Headteacher in some cases. At The Hyndburn Academy your child will have a number of different teachers and staff that support them in different ways, so how do you know who to turn to?

Teachers

If you have a question about a specific subject, this could be related to classwork, homework or progress, your first port of call is your child’s teacher,  you can do this via email or phone.

If it is a pastoral question or concern then we have a number of different people you can talk to.

Form Tutor

Your child will have a Form Tutor. They will see them each morning and they are there to look after them in school. They will make sure that they start the day off with the right books and equipment. They will also pass out any messages to the students regarding trips and other school activities.

Head of Year 7 - Miss Burrows

I am always available to support with any of the above. The best way to contact me is via my email address: mandy.burrows@hyndburnacademy.org.uk

The most important thing is to keep communicating. Often when things go wrong it is because we have not been made aware of something and we have to pick it up when it has already escalated. Any concern to you is a concern to me no matter how small, so please contact me. If you call the main school number 01254 885378, Mrs Jarvis our receptionist will put you through to the right person.

Meet the staff

All the staff and students at The Hyndburn Academy can't wait to meet you. These are the key members of staff for Year 7.
