SEND and Inclusion

At The Hyndburn Academy, we pride ourselves on being fully inclusive, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to attend mainstream lessons alongside their peers. We believe that by providing an inclusive environment, we are fostering a sense of belonging and creating an atmosphere where every student can thrive.

To support our dedication to inclusivity, our staff regularly participate in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to enhance their knowledge and skills in supporting a variety of additional needs. This ensures that our students receive the best possible support to help them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

The SEND department is led by Mrs. Hindle, our SENDCo. With her guidance, along with the support of Mrs. Robbins, who leads the Exam Access Arrangements for the school, our department works tirelessly to provide the necessary resources and accommodations for our students.

The department comprises of specialist staff who are dedicated to supporting students across the academy. Their expertise and commitment to excellence ensure that every student receives the individualised support they need to reach their full potential. We truly believe that First Quality Teaching is at the heart of our commitment to supporting our SEND students.

What we do

We provide support for students who have additional learning needs relating to the four categories of SEND.

Cognition and Learning difficulties
Communication and Interaction difficulties
Sensory and Physical difficulties
Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties

Students who require additional support have access to a wide range of interventions and provisions. Our teaching staff provide Quality First Teaching with the support of the pastoral team to support all students.

Interventions

We offer numerous interventions in school:

Ruth Miskin reading support.
Numeracy support
Spelling
EAL support
Homework Club

We work with a range of external agencies who provide specialist support and advice for individual students depending on their needs. These include:

Educational Psychologist
Paediatrician
Occupational Therapist
ELCAS/ CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service)
Auditory and visual support services
Local Authority SEN/Inclusion Team

Assessment and Monitoring

All students who enter the Academy are assessed for baseline reading, spelling and complete MiDYAS testing. This information is used alongside other data to identify students who may require additional support.

Intervention sessions are provided to target specific needs. Students who do not make progress in light of interventions are placed on the SEN register and further interventions may be offered.

The SEN register is reviewed on an ongoing basis to ensure that students are moved through the SEN stages of the Code of Practice in an accurate and timely manner.

Inclusive Education

We pride ourselves here at The Hyndburn Academy on being fully inclusive and all students attend mainstream lessons with their peers. Staff at the Academy are continually receiving CPD on how to support a variety of additional needs, therefore in line with the DfE Code of practice, First Quality Teaching is at the heart of our dedication to support SEND students.
